April 11, 1997

ANN ARBOR, MI., April 11, 1997--The Internet Public Library (IPL), a project based at the University of Michigan School of Information, is pleased to announce the release of "Stately Knowledge: Facts about the United States" (/youth/stateknow/), a fact-filled and fun-to-use resource for students, teachers, parents and anyone interested in finding out more details about the United States and Washington D.C.

Need to know the capital of Alabama? Want to know which hockey teams are in California? How about the size of Montana? All that information is here -- and more!

There are two pages loaded with information for each state. "Just the Facts" includes frequently needed facts about each state, a US map indicating the state's location, a picture of the state's flag, and a descriptive list of WWW sites. A second page, "More Facts" includes unique trivia about each state and a list of famous natives and residents. Did you know the world's largest porch swing is in Nebraska and Harry Houdini was from Wisconsin?

Stately Knowledge has numerous features. Looking for the "big picture" on facts about the states? There are several charts including: comparisons of size and population, date of entry into the Union, state capitals, flowers, and more! Looking for a fun way to test your Stately Knowledge? Games on state flags and capitals will test your knowledge. Stately Knowledge also provides a bibliography of books and other resources about the states, as well as links to other resources on the Web.

Stately Knowledge--it's one stop shopping for everything you need to know about the 50 States!

The Internet Public Library is a project based at the University of Michigan School of Information, partially supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The library began as a graduate student project in 1995, and is now staffed by professional librarians with assistance from students and volunteer librarians from around the World. The library maintains a collection of network-based ready reference works; responds to reference queries, creates resources for children and young adults; evaluates and categorizes resources on the Internet, and provides a space for exhibitions. The library strives to be a source of innovation in the networked environment, seeking partnerships with organizations with compatible goals.
