- Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743, The American Philosophical Society is the country's first learned society. Its mission is to promote useful knowledge in the sciences and humanities through research, scholarly meetings, publications, library resources, and community outreach programs. The APS has a membership of 700 world-wide elected members who are distinguished scholars in the humanities and natural and social sciences, as well as eminent individuals in the professions, arts, and public affairs. The Association also maintains a list of links to Graduate Programs in Philosophy in Australasia.
